The group’s debut album, 1975’s The Dictators Go Girl Crazy! (titled in the style of a trashy teensploitation flick) announced a teenage takeover of the rock ‘n’ roll scene. The band was formed in 1972 by Andy "Adny" Shernoff, who was attending the State University of New York at New Paltz, and Ross "The Boss" Friedman who was playing in a local band called Total Crudd. Scott "Top Ten" Kempner was asked to join, and the trio rented a house in Kerhonkson, New York, where they lived and rehearsed with various drummers.

The band broke up for two years in 1978. By 1980 The Dictators started to do reunion gigs. This led to a live album, more reunions, tours, another band called Manitoba's Wild Kingdom, which quickly morphed back into The Dictators. Manitoba's Wild Kingdom was more metal, and more 80's than the Dictators, but the guys always knew who they were.
