The wheel bug is most commonly noticed in late summer and early fall when the large adults are found. The adults die with cold weather and there is one generation per year. - Common Green Bottle Fly. Lucilia sericata. Adults have metallic blue-green or copper-green bodies. They have black hair on their backs, black legs, and antennae.
- Eastern Firefly. Photinus pyralis. Also known as Big Dipper Fireflies. Their outer wings are dark brown with yellow margins, and their head has two orange spots.
- European/Western Honey Bee. Apis mellifera. They are primarily red or brown with black bands and orange-yellow rings on their abdomens. They have hairy thoraxes and slightly hairy abdomens.
- Monarch. Danaus plexippus. Monarch butterflies have a wingspan of roughly 4 inches (10 cm). Their recognizable coloring is a “stained glass” pattern of orange with black veins.
Oct 21, 2021 · Wheel Bugs, according to the Department of Entomology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, are one of the largest members of the family of insects known as assassin bugs. According to the department, the eggs of the Wheel Bugs will hatch in May and June, leading nymphs to soon begin hunting for prey.

These insects mature and roam during the mid-summer. As fall approaches mating takes place, and 60-100 eggs are deposited on trees and shrubs, which then hatch in the spring. Not particularly common, wheel bugs are nevertheless found in about a quarter of the central, southern, and southeastern states. The one in the photo was in northern Virginia.
