According to the department, the eggs of the Wheel Bugs will hatch in May and June, leading nymphs to soon begin hunting for prey.

- Common Green Bottle Fly. Lucilia sericata. Adults have metallic blue-green or copper-green bodies. They have black hair on their backs, black legs, and antennae.

Not particularly common, wheel bugs are nevertheless found in about a quarter of the central, southern, and southeastern states. The one in the photo was in northern Virginia. Frankly, they remind me of a prehistoric animal.
