Jul 3, 2024 · You can create a beautiful front yard using simple landscaping methods such as adding mulch, flower borders, window boxes, paths, gravel and rocks, and more. Plus, many of these projects can even be finished in less than a weekend. Below, check out these affordable and simple front yard landscaping ideas that will inspire you.
Jun 21, 2024 · Landscaping on a budget doesn't mean settling for a shabby-looking yard. The right plants, softscape and hardscape features, and decorative outdoor ideas can upgrade your outdoor space without breaking the bank.
- Ditch the lawn. Lawns are not a cheap backyard or front yard option, particularly if you live in a warmer climate. They require constant irrigation, so you'll need to pay for an irrigation system of some kind, and constant maintenance during the summer months, which will require you to buy and store a lawnmower.
- Build a stepping stone pathway. Stepping stone walkways are one of the most budget-friendly additions to a front yard, and they require very little additional spending beyond the stones or slabs you'll be using.
- Plant a tree. A tree is a beautiful budget-friendly solution for any front yard. Anderson particularly recommends this idea for a small front yard where 'a single tree makes a terrific focal point.'
- Consider xeriscaping. Xeriscaping is the budget front yard landscaping idea we expect to see more of everywhere in the coming years. It's already becoming popular beyond the hot and arid climate it originates from, not least because of the low cost of this simple form of landscaping.
- Use Large Flower Pots as Landscaping Features. Oversized flower pots placed in areas like your front porch and driveway can make just as much impact as a large flower bed.
- Plant Additional Flower Beds Around Existing Features. Not every flower bed needs a dedicated retaining wall. If you want to add extra plants to your front yard, you don't need to build additional features.
- Opt for Pea Gravel and Stepping Stones Over Concrete. Pea gravel is cheaper and a more stylish alternative to concrete. A pea gravel patio or walkway is also a fairly easy DIY, so it'll save you on any labor costs.
- Just Stick With Pavers. If your yard already has lush grass on it, there's no sense in covering it with gravel or concrete to make a walkway. A few affordable pavers will make a perfect spot for your feet to land.
- Avoid Annuals. Annual plants such as petunias and impatiens are terrific for filling planting beds and containers with color. However, they'll only last for your current growing season and won't survive the winter across most of the United States.
- Fill Gaps with Large Grasses. Tall ornamental grasses like switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), beak grass (Diarrhena obovata), or Indian grass (Sorghastrum nutans) are front yard landscaping ideas with beautiful texture and movement.
- Limit Types of Plants. While it might be tempting to buy a large variety of plants from the garden center, a simple front yard landscaping idea is to purchase no more than five types of plants.
- Densely Plant to Cut Weeds. To cut down on costly yard care, plant densely enough to make sure all ground is covered. Weedy plant species take advantage of open soil, plenty of light, and moisture.
