Ayer (/ ɛər / AIR) is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Originally part of Groton, it was incorporated February 14, 1871, [1] and became a major commercial railroad junction. The town was home to Camp Stevens, a training camp for Massachusetts volunteers during the American Civil War.
Ayer's history dates back to 1667 when the first mill, used to grind corn in the agricultural community, was built. Originally part of the town of Groton, Ayer was incorporated in 1871 and named in honor of Dr. James Cook Ayer, a prominent resident of Lowell who provided the funding for the construction of Town Hall (1873-76).

May 11, 2012 · Ayer put in the foundation and said to townsfolk, “You do the first floor.” Ayer then financed the second and third floor. Construction began in 1873. Town Hall was dedicated in 1876. Later Ayer’s son, Frederic Fanning Ayer, would give $5,000 to the town to purchase books for a town library.
