East Side Gallery. • Mühlenstraße 47-80, 10243 Berlin. The longest preserved piece of the Berlin Wall, standing between Ostbahnhof and Oberbaumbrücke, is known worldwide as the East Side Gallery. After the Wall fell, 118 artists from 21 countries redesigned 1.3 kilometers of the former border into the longest open-air gallery in the world.
Along the grounds of the Berlin Wall Memorial, from Nordbahnhof to Schwedter Straße, over 140 metal incident markers have been embedded in the ground, referring to real events that took place at this location during the time of division. They tell of attempted, successful and thwarted escape attempts and everyday life at the border.
