A tax of 10 mills on a property with an assessed value of $10,000 is equal to $100 ($10,000 x 0.1). An effective tax rate is the amount you actually pay annually divided by the value of your property. So if you pay $1,500 in taxes annually and your home’s market value is $100,000, your effective tax rate is 1.5%.
These bills lowered residential property taxes for the 2023 tax year by exempting $55,000 from residential property values and reducing the residential assessment rate from 6.765% to 6.7%. These changes are only short-term solutions and aren’t in place for the 2024 tax year.
