The monument, founded in 1913, commemorates the arrival of Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, the first European to visit the West Coast of the United States, who sailed into San Diego Bay in September 1542. A statue of Cabrillo stands in the visitors’ center. Panoramic views of the city, harbor, and ocean draw visitors to the site.

Cabrillo National Monument (Spanish: Monumento nacional Cabrillo) is a national monument at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula in San Diego, California, United States. It commemorates the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542.
