Having 4GB or RAM dedicated to FTB helps, a processor with fast single core speeds helps, but the greatest help will be having FTB on a SSD. There's a nifty little utility mod that shows you what mods load for how long. Put it in the mods folder, start Minecraft and then read the loading-log.log with a text editor.

Fabric is lightweight, but also means its lightweight, it has less included features, you'll have to write it yourself. Transferring mods from one modloader to another probably means rewriting it from scratch. I stick to just Forge. If your thinking of using fabric use quilt instead, it’s fabric but better.
