It should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. Half-staff is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag must be flown at half-staff on all buildings on the death of any officer listed below, for the period indicated: For the President or a former President: 30 days from the date of death.
“Half-staff” refers to the point on the flagpole which is halfway between the top and the bottom of the pole. Flying the flag at half-staff is a sign of mourning. When flown at half-staff, the flag should be first hoisted briskly to the peak, then immediately slowly and respectfully lowered to the half-staff position.
Raising and Lowering the Flag: When lowering the flag to half-staff, it's first raised to the peak for an instant. Then, it's reduced to the half-staff position, and the flag should be raised again to the peak before being fully lowered for the day. Step 1. Dismount your flagpole. Remove your flagpole off of the mount rather than trying to use a ladder to attach the streamer, for obvious safety reasons. Step 2. Attach your mourning streamer.
