Mar 1, 2024 · Pause at the Peak: Briefly pause the flag at the peak to honor the resilience of the American spirit. Lower to Half-Staff: Solemnly lower the flag to the half-staff position, about midway between the top and bottom of the staff, as a sign of mourning or remembrance.
When flown at half-staff, the flag should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to half-staff position. It should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. Half-staff is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff.
A house-mounted flag pole is not long enough to fly the flag at half-staff, so etiquette dictates that you fly a black mourning streamer atop your flag instead. We’ve created a quick 3-minute video for everything you need to know about flying your flag at home with a mourning streamer on days when we honor and remember the fallen.
