  1. May 23, 2003 · However, the '2600 CPU, the 6507, is only able to directly access 2^13 bytes (8192 bytes) of memory. That is, only 13 of the 16 address lines are actually connected to physical memory. This is our first introduction to 'memory mapping' and mirroring.

  2. The 6502 (or 6507 variant used in the 2600) can access the first 256 bytes extremely efficiently. It's as fast to use that chunk of RAM as one of the chip's internal registers. The Atari 2600 split this into two 128 byte areas. The first half was used for the graphics system.

Here’s a quick overview of the Atari 2600 console: 1. Developer: Atari 2. Release: 1977 3. Most Popular Title: Pac-Man 4. Sales: 30 million units 5. Nickname: The VCS

The Atari 2600 (sometimes referred to as the Atari VCS), features 1970s vibes through and through. From its simple black design and angular form factor to the switches that adorn its front, the console is a remnant from a bygone era. As for the controllers? At launch, the system came with two distinct variations. First was the innovative joystick c...

The Atari 2600 introduced the world to countless new titles, including Pong, Asteroids, and Dig Dug. Seemingly overnight, these iconic games catapulted to the height of America’s pop culture lexicon, all thanks to Atari. In reality, it took a few years for the Atari 2600 to become such a runaway success. It wasn’t until Space Invaders – the action-...

In total, the Atari 2600 sold roughly 30 million units! Unbelievable for a game system. But that’s a drop in the bucket compared to the console’s impact. The Atari 2600 changed the entire industry for the better. It moved the world of gaming (and technology in general) forward, and paved the way for a burgeoning artform: game design. Unfortunately,...

  3. The Atari 2600 hardware was based on the MOS Technology 6507 chip, offering a maximum resolution of 160 x 192 pixels (NTSC), 128 colors, 128 bytes of RAM with 4 KB on cartridges (64 KB via bank switching).

  4. Apr 20, 2018 · Most of the address space for the 6507 would ultimately be provided by ROM cartridges which would be plugged into the Atari. The question I have is that the 6502 treats two pages of RAM in a special way: 0x0000-0x00FF: The zero page.

  5. Nov 26, 2021 · There is a memory map out there. I think that the SRAM just ignores some address bits. Some bits act as chip enable for ROM and IO. The 128 bytes of RAM are contained within the 6532 RIOT chip and are 'mapped' to multiple address locations. 128 bytes is crazy low, even for a 6502 based machine.
