- A growing body of research evidence supports the idea that individual patient rooms and their design can be associated with reduced infections, fewer errors, fewer falls, reduced anxiety, stronger family support, less self-censoring by patients when speaking to physicians, and improved outcomes. 1, 2 In this issue of JAMA Internal Medicine, an article by McDonald et al 3 provides an interesting view on the history and impact of the movement from multi-occupant to single-occupant rooms.

Our study examines how nurses perceived the transition from a hospital with multi-bedded patient rooms to one with solely single-occupancy patient rooms designed according to principles of a healing environment.
Moreover, even less of these studies examine operating rooms or have clinical co-authors to give the design assessments clinical face-validity. Improving Future Operating Room Design. With the increasing interest on hospital and surgeon performance, the time is ripe to explore how the operating room could be designed better to improve both.
