The source of the Thames is marked with a stone inscribed with the words: “The Conservators of the River Thames 1857 – 1974. This Stone was Placed Here to Mark the Source of the River Thames”.

298 km / 185 miles. This National Trail, unique insofar as it is the only one mainly following a river, was officially opened in 1996. From the source the Trail meanders through Cricklade, Lechlade, Oxford, Abingdon, Windsor, Reading, Henley, Marlow and Maidenhead, and passing Windsor Castle, the palaces of Hampton Court and Kew, and Richmond.

Jan 5, 2022 · The Thames Path extension. For truly dedicated adventurers there is an additional section from the Thames Barrier in Woolwich to Crayford Ness, near Erith. This 10 mile path isn’t part of the recognised National Trail and is sometimes known as the Thames Path Southeast Extension. It was opened in 2001 and links the London Outer Orbital Path.
