One of the most frustrating elements of the Minecraft local multiplayer experience (both for the PC and the PE edition) is that the original game host has to be active to access previous creations. If there are two parents and two kids playing Minecraft in a household for example, and they spend a few hours one weekend working on a big structure ho...
There are two ways to approach installing the simple vanilla Mojang-supplied Minecraft server. One method is very Windows-centric as you simply download an .EXE file and run it, with a convenient little graphical user window. That method doesn’t necessarily help OS X and Linux users however, so we’re going to use the .JAR based method which will he...
Just like you can easily inject Forge mod loaderinto a standalone Minecraft installation you can easily inject Forge mod loader into the Minecraft server. You can reuse the same installer you used for Forge in the previous modding tutorial; simply rerun it (it doesn’t matter if you’re using the .EXE or the .JAR) and adjust the settings as such: Sel...
At this point you’re ready to rock, either with or without mods depending on which flavor you installed. That doesn’t mean, however, you’re done tinkering with your server. Let’s go over a few extra things you can do to improve your server experience.
You can always install more mods. Keep in mind that more mods require more CPU/GPU/RAM resources. Make careful note of the mods you do install, because everyone that joins your server will need to have those mods installed too. Generally speaking the /mod/ folder of the client and the/mod/ folder of the server should be mirrors of each other. Need ...
If you want to play with people outside your local network you can set up port forwardingso players outside your home network can access the server. Most home broadband connections can easily support many players. Because the server doesn’t have a password system, you may want to consider creating a whitelist on the server. Use the command and para...
Inside the server folder you’ll find a file named server.properties. If you open this file in a text editor you’ll find a simple configuration file that can be manually edited. While some of these settings are available via server/in-game commands, many of them are not. Using simple true/false or numerical toggles it’s possible to allow players to ...

That depends largely on your computer’s hardware and how much you can allocate to the server. 2GB RAM allocated will be perfectly sufficient if you’re running a vanilla server with no huge auto farms. On java you can just "open in lan" in the in-game menu and people can join you if they are on the same local network.
You can't even play Java single player without a server since there's always one running. That's why it says "open to LAN". The server's already there it just doesn't let people in. Can even severely get the tickrates out-of-sync. But hosting a non-internal one isn't diffucult either way.
