This study examined whether the intensity of naturally occurring cravings can be reduced by replacing the craving-related imagery with alternative, pleasant imagery. Participants were instructed to vividly imagine a personally engaging and pleasant activity.

The technique relies on a memory-based habituation process when behavioral and motivational responses to a stimulus decrease after its repeated presentation.
