Jan 16, 2012 · It DOES mention how slimes require the chunks they spawn in to be at a certain height level, but I'm more concerned with how the rest of the common hostile mobs spawn. (Namely Zombies, Creepers, Skeletons and Spiders) To clarify a bit: Mobs spawn naturally within a 15x15 chunk (240x240 block) area around the player.

Hostile mobs spawn in and around your builds at zero light level or if it is night time. Mobs such as creepers have the potential to destroy your creations, while others may attack you. There are many ways of preventing hostile creatures from spawning.
Light blocks One of the most basic ways to prevent mob spawning is by placing torches. These increase the light level around them, stopping hostiles from spawning. Other blocks such as glowstone or shroomlight emit higher light levels, but are harder to come by. This method does not work with mobs whose spawning does not rely on low light level, such as slimes, magma cubes and hoglins.
Slabs and partial blocks Mobs cannot spawn on blocks that are less than a full block in height. Areas covered in bottom slabs are unable to spawn mobs, no matter the light level, although double slabs, top slabs and upside-down stairs are still spawnable. Also, dirt path and farmland are partial blocks (15/16th of a block in height) and cannot be spawned upon.
Transparent blocks Mobs also cannot spawn on top of transparent blocks, such as glass, or partially transparent blocks, such as leaves.
Carpet Mobs cannot spawn on carpets because they are not a full block.
Snow layer Snow layers of thicknesses 2 to 7 prevent hostile mobs from spawning.
Redstone components Mobs cannot spawn on buttons, levers, pressure plates, and all types of rails.

Mobs spawning between bottom of the world and highest block was changed in 1.18 experimental snapshot 3 to have spawns consistent across all y levels regardless of the highest block. The changes were then undone in 1.18 experimental snapshot 5.
Many mobs spawn in groups (called "packs" in Java and "herds" in Bedrock). One notable difference from Java Edition is that most animals can spawn at light level 7 or higher rather than 9 or higher. There are two types of environmental spawns: cluster spawns and structure spawns.
Dec 25, 2022 · No mobs can spawn at Y=-64 as there are no blocks below (and in fact the game doesn't even try if the minimum height is the Y-level chosen). If you break the bedrock and put spawnable blocks in its place, there's a 50% chance it'll try spawning on top of them at Y=63. Also, of course, the specific number "-64" only applies to the vanilla Overworld.

Nov 25, 2023 · Mob Spawners spawn rate in Minecraft. On the flip side, Mob Spawners now require a Light Level of 11 or lower to work. This means the player must create a light level of at least 12 to deactivate them. The best way to do this is by placing torches directly around or onto the spawner. A normal torch gives off a light level of 14.
