He only needs to be in yellow starlight to survive but he can hold it like a battery too. Good luck trying to define that range though. To survive, not fight, it's far. The suit is still a bit of a necessity, firstly because it shelters him from any hostile stuff like Kryptonite, secondly because if he strays too far from sunlight his powers will diminish, and thirdly because it has a radio that lets him stay in touch with people, and of course he can't talk in space.
