Nov 6, 2023 · Venus, a scorching wasteland of a planet according to scientists, may have once had tectonic plate movements similar to those believed to have occurred on early Earth, a new study found. The finding sets up tantalizing scenarios regarding the possibility of early life on Venus, its evolutionary past, and the history of the solar system.
Jul 28, 2023 · We don’t know for sure, though, and looking for evidence of past life on Venus is almost impossible with current technologies. Although orbiters can teach us a lot about a planet, to search for signs of past life we need to take a much closer look. On Mars, we look for past microbial life by sending rovers like Curiosity and Perseverance to ...
Nov 10, 2020 · Yet Venus also exerts an irresistible pull for astrobiologists – scientists who study how life begins, its necessary ingredients and the planetary environments that it might require. Venus is a kind of negative to Earth’s positive; by studying what went so very wrong, we might learn what it takes to get life right.
Mar 28, 2024 · Earth life may have traveled to Venus aboard sky-skimming asteroid. "It doesn't mean that life there will be the same as here. In fact, we know it can't be," Sara Seager, an astrophysicist and ...
Planetary habitability in the Solar System is the study that searches the possible existence of past or present extraterrestrial life in those celestial bodies. As exoplanets are too far away and can only be studied by indirect means, the celestial bodies in the Solar System allow for a much more detailed study: direct telescope observation, space probes, rovers and even human spaceflight.
How soon that can happen depends on two unknowns: the prevalence of life in the galaxy and how lucky we get as we take those first, tentative, exploratory steps. Our early planet finding missions, such as NASA’s Kepler and its extended incarnation, K2, or the James Webb Space Telescope, could yield bare bones evidence of the potentially habitable worlds.

Since we already know that Earth has abundant life, in the next two sections we will focus on the possibilities for life at Venus and Mars. VENUS Venus is often known as our “sister planet,” since it orbits the Sun just slightly inside the orbit of Earth (0.70 AU versus 1.00 AU), and has an average diameter almost the same as Earth (12,104 km versus 12,756 km).
