They partially absorb the rising heat in a way that it is distributed more evenly around the firebox. As the fire goes out, the fire bricks release the absorbed heat.

Begin by applying a thin layer of refractory mortar onto one side of each brick using a trowel. Then, press each brick firmly against the corresponding wall or floor surface inside the stove until it is securely in place.
