A cherry tree requires a 5×5 area of unobstructed space 8 blocks above its sapling to grow (9 blocks including the sapling itself). No horizontal clearance is needed at the base of the tree (a sapling planted in a hole 1 block deep can still grow).

Because of the larger breaking area on Bedrock Edition, you can grow oak, birch, jungle, acacia, spruce, and even dark oak (by using boats to shift the breaking area) inside the breaking area of the wither.

Since a few new trees were added in the latest update, (current is 1.20.1 at time of writing,) I did some experiments with the new trees in case anyone finds it helpful: Mangrove: 15x15 width, 27 height (vines extend an extra block from each side) Cherry: 7x17 width, 11 height (may grow aligned either x or z)
