There are many admirable dive sites in which to spot dugongs, however, our favorites are: Secret Garden, Roda Reef, and Tasi Tolu.

The sea bottom is gradually deepening towards the open sea. The water is approx. 6-10 m (20-33 ft) deep in the central part and ~12-15 m (40-50 ft) on the outer side of the bay.
In the 1980s the Red Sea dugong population was estimated at about 4000, however, the estimated amount now in unknown (although definitely considerably smaller). Just seven known dugongs reside along the entire 100km coastline between Marsa Alam and El Quseir although actual numbers could be higher. On our trip to Marsa Mubarak we just saw one.
Marsa Alam area is also one of the few places in the world where you can swim with dugongs. Although their population is very small (it is estimated that less than ten dugongs live along the 100 km long coastline between Al-Quseir and Marsa Alam), some territorial males almost permanently reside in specific spots.
