A few common beginner mistakes and things to change: 1: Mistake - not getting enough cities. Cities are the backbone of your strength in Civ 6. The more cities you have, the more you can do. In most cases, it's better to have many okay cities rather than a few strong ones. To improve - settle early, and settle often.
It's more of a bonuses thing than an actual intelligence thing but Lategame AI is excellent. Also, with the Cheats Panel mod, you can gift the AI vast sums of money of your chosen amount that can significantly improve their performance. I.e. they can quickly amass a giant military.
