For decades, the restaurant had been a symbol of Italian-American cuisine and a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. Its closure marked the end of an era and left a void in the city’s culinary landscape.
The decades between 1920 and 1970 saw an expansion in the variety of New York ethnic restaurants. Indian, Middle-Eastern, Armenian, and Scandinavian places appeared. Many of these combined exotic atmosphere with what now seems surprisingly ordinary food with just a few stereotypical foreign dishes.
