Millard Fillmore was born in Locke, New York on January 7,1800. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to a wool carder and cloth dresser. When the apprenticeship ended, young Millard wanted to spend Christmas with his family. Having no other means of transportation, he walked home—a distance of 100 miles. While studying law, Fillmore taught school.
