The presence of contaminating sequences is greater in low-biomass samples (such as from blood or the lung) than in high-biomass samples (such as from faeces), suggesting that there is a critical tipping point where contaminating DNA becomes dominant in sequence libraries.
Sep 1, 2020 · In this study, we assessed the bacterial compositions of samples from the surfaces of various sites across different types of biological laboratories. We have qualitatively assessed these possible bacterial contaminants, and found distinct differences in their bacterial community composition.

Safety in a microbiology laboratory is important in the prevention of infection that might be caused by the microorganisms being studied. In addition, many of the reagents, equipment, and procedures used are potentially hazardous.
Dec 17, 2014 · A recent report warns that DNA extraction kits and other laboratory reagents are considerable sources of contamination in microbiome experiments. The issue of contamination is particularly problematic for samples of low biomass.
Oct 25, 2016 · “Decontamination” is a general term that usually refers to a process that makes an item safe to handle, or a space safe to occupy, and can include processes ranging from simple cleaning with soap and water to sterilization.
