Work on this great dictionary first began in the 1860s, and many people associate the OED in their minds with the days of Victorian Empire, when there was red all over the map of the world and England and the English language seemed at the centre of the world.
OED's earliest evidence for embarrassed is from 1677, in a dictionary by Guy Miege, author and lexicographer. embarrassed is formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a French lexical item.
