There are enough passages to work on one per week. We recommend that students who need it, practice reading one passage at least 3x daily for a week (15 -‐20 repetitions). 1. First give students the opportunity to listen to a reading by a fluent reader, while “following along in their heads.”

The goal is not to be the fastest, but in general to increase their score for each passage while reading smoothly, paying attention to meaning and pausing when they should.

Beginning readers need practice segmenting words, reading sight words, and developing reading fluency. This little bundle includes five fluency passages and comprehension questions to teach and reinforce those tricky r-controlled vowels. It also includes five sheets of fluency phrases.

Fluency = The ability to read accurately, quickly, and with appropriate intonation and expression. Accuracy = 80-95% correct in connected text. Rate = As quickly as possible, without sacrificing comprehension. This will depend on text and purpose for reading. Prosody = Sounding like natural speech, with an emphasis on “chunking.”
