Oct 22, 2024 · So, based on the consistent use of this term elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible, it only makes sense for us to conclude that God created the woman to be a strong ally and fellow warrior with the man. Fighting battles is not just for males; females are called to put on our armor (see Ephesians 6).
Oct 24, 2023 · Intrinsic in the biblical definition of a woman is this quality—this gift. Woman is man’s cooperative complement or reciprocal; she is not merely a helpful assistant or an add-on accessory (1 Corinthians 11:11; 1 Peter 3:7).

How do we know the man was alone? The writer gives us a short flashback in verses 19–20. Animals had been created and brought before Adam, each with its partner like it. As he named them, he became aware that while every animal had a mate, a creature like itself, there was no corresponding human. Only Adam. The writer of Genesis pronounces the prob...
The Hebrew words ezer kenegdodescribe the person who would satisfy what was missing in the man’s life: a companion unlike the animals but rather like himself. The Hebrew word ezer is a combination of two roots, one meaning “to rescue, to save,” and the other meaning “to be strong.” And in Genesis 2, ezer is modified by the conjunction kenegdoso tha...
Scholars who argue for male hierarchy assert that Adam was looking for an assistant among the animals but could not find one suitable. In English, a helper is an assistant, usually lesser in rank. Howe...
Since ezerappears predominantly in military situations in Scripture, let’s imagine the Allies of World War II: Britain has stood up against the Nazis, fighting for her life as the rest of Europe has fallen. She is a strong nation but her enemy is steadily overwhelming her. Enter the Americans, their own former colonies turned allies, arriving just ...
May 13, 2018 · This is one of the most misunderstood words in the Bible, but really it’s quite simple: Genesis 2:18. Then YHWH God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper [ezer] suitable for him.” And so God created woman to be an ezer to man. But this word, translated as helper, is not about making brunch and darning a ...
Feb 4, 2017 · In two cases it refers to the first woman, Eve, in Genesis 2. Three times it refers to powerful nations Israel called on for help when besieged. In the sixteen remaining cases the word refers to God as our help. He is the one who comes alongside us in our helplessness. That's the meaning of ezer.
Mar 4, 2023 · (Genesis 2:20) Helper. Many women in our day have chafed at this word, at this characterization of our calling from God. A helper is clearly not in charge. A helper is not usually center stage. A helper may feel (and rightly!) that she has gifts and talents that enable her to do the work better.

Sep 11, 2020 · My first surprise was that except for the two references to the woman in Genesis 2, ezer always alludes to Yahweh as Israel’s “help.”. I knew that ezer is often used directly of Yahweh, of course, but I thought that the rest of the time it refers to someone else. And there’s a way that is true.
