The Mental Status Exam (MSE) is a standard part of any psychiatric interview. It is a description of clinical observations of a patient's current emotional state and mental functioning. There is alogia or poverty of speech in Schizophrenia. Speech can be rapid or slow, pressured (hard to interrupt the pt), hesitant, emotional, dramatic, monotonous, loud, whispered, slurred, staccato, or mumbled. Speech impairments, such as stuttering, are included in this section.
