Make a scatter plot of the data. 10. On your scatter plot sketch a line that appears to best fit the data. Then write an equation of the line. 11. The slope of a highway through the mountains is 12°. Use your model to predict the truck’s maximum speed going uphill. In Exercises 12–15, use the table below, which gives the number of paperback
A scatter diagram is a tool for analyzing relationships between two variables. One variable is plotted on the horizontal axis and the other is plotted on the vertical axis. The pattern of theirintersecting points can graphically show relationship patterns. Most often a scatter diagram is usedto prove or disprove cause-and-effect relationships.
The stronger the relationship, the better the corresponding regression model (linear, exponential, etc.) will be a predicting values of the dependent variable. When we look at a scatter diagram, we want to notice the overall pattern and any deviations from the pattern. The scatter diagrams shown below illustrate these concepts.
In this example, in general, as GPA increases so does an individual’s motivation score. One of the students in this example does not seem to follow the general pattern: Mary. She is one of the students with the lowest GPA, but she has the maximum score on the motivation scale. This makes her an exception or an outlier.

A scatter plot can suggest various kinds of correlations between variables with a certain confidence interval. For example, weight and height, weight would be on x axis and height would be on the y axis. Correlations may be positive (rising), negative (falling), or null (uncorrelated). If the pattern of dots slopes from lower

A scatter diagram — also known as a “scatter plot” — is a graphic representation of the relationship between two variables. Teams use scatter diagrams to help them identify cause-and-effect relationships between two variables. For example, after brainstorming multiple causes and effects using a fishbone (cause and effect) diagram, your
