We use a large sample of 56,221 small, medium, and large firms from France, Germany, and Italy, and our results indicate that the impact of working capital management on performance strongly depends on size.

Prior Work: The review of literature establishes what is already known on the issue of smallness. There is an enormous literature on growth, but very little on smallness. Nonetheless, it is evident that small firms are qualitatively different from large. They have informal management systems, limited resources and they behave differently.
Employing an inductive analysis of responses from a survey of 2,521 small business owners about employment regulation, the nature and effects of smallness is examined. Findings – It was found that owners' choice making combines with perceptions about their resources to produce a condition of smallness.
