Among the learning strategies cited in the literature, the metacognitive and cognitive strategies are most relevant to reading. Metacognition is concerned with monitoring, or watching, and evaluating the success of the learning process. Cognitive strategies, on the other hand, relate to the specific contexts and learning tasks.

This strategy was developed by scholar and teacher Peter Elbow and encourages you, the reader, to play two roles while reading. First, you read a text or engage a project as though you believe it. You annotate the text by marking the reasons why you (in your role as “believer”) would believe these things.
The Stances in Action This session shows how readers move into and out of each of the stances as they build their envisionments. This program serves as a model of effective reading habits for the viewer, focusing on two extended discussions as the onscreen readers individually and collectively enter and become immersed in their reading, and step back and reflect on its lessons.
