The amount of work done on a system is the change in energy of the system. We’ll use the symbol W for work and the symbol U for energy. (We will define work later.) The English sentence “The work done equals the amount of energy transformed” we can write as. W = U. This is called “The First Law of Thermodynamics”.
Like so many other things in physics we have to use an exact definition to really explain what work is. In fact, we have to use two definitions of work. Definition 1: Work is a transfer of energy. This is probably the most basic definition possible, but it still has many ways of being interpreted.

W = Fd cos θ, (7.3) where W is work, F is the magnitude of the force on the system, between the force vector F and the displacement vector d . d is the magnitude of the displacement of the system, and θ is the angle. Figure 7.2 Examples of work. (a) The work done by the force F on this lawn mower is Fd cos θ .
Work - Definition. Work W is the energy transferred to or from an object by means of a force acting on the object. Energy transferred to the object is positive work, and energy transferred from the object is negative work. •There are only two relevant variables in one dimension: the force, Fx, and the displacement, Δx.

UCSD Physics 10 Work, defined • Work carries a specific meaning in physics – Simple form: work = force distance W = F · d • Work can be done by you, as well as on you – Are you the pusher or the pushee • Work is a measure of expended energy – Work makes you tired • Machines make work easy (ramps, levers, etc.)
Physics 1010. • Physicist’s definition of “work”: Work = Force × distance. W = F × d. – The work done by a force is equal to the magnitude of the force multiplied by the distance over which the force acts. – Note that work done by a force can be negative. Example: I lower an object to the floor, the work I do is negative.
