The development of social welfare states to channel and moderate that change was important after World War II. But today the inequality, insecurity, and interdependence it is breeding are creating serious political problems for democracies.

Here, however, I consider only how the relationship between capitalism and democracy has changed in the developed democracies over the decades since the Second World War with an emphasis on the distribution of well-being. To focus on change over time, I also give short shrift to national variations.
