Man of Steel was a terrible Superman movie. It was bad and it's no wonder it's follow ups, BVS and JL, both bombed at the box office.
As OP said it's a much more purely heroic moment than the finale with Zod. I think if they'd shown people in metropolis watching Superman destroy the world engine then they could have shown some people actually cheering Superman on during the fight with Zod.
