He didn't have a ton of faith in the manuscript and gave it to his 8 year old daughter to read. She loved it and nagged him for more, and he used that reaction as a basis for purchasing the book. The whole fished-out-of-the-trash narrative is fiction and exaggeration cobbled together by people who want their stories to sound nice and ehrmagerd, it almost didn't happen!
