Marguerite, who was born in London, began teaching dance in 1912 and founded the Vacani School of Dance in 1920. The school aimed to teach ballroom dances and social etiquette of the day to young ladies and gentlemen, while debutante ladies learned to curtsey for their presentation parties.
Miss Stass had first met Miss Vacani when she took her daughter for classes, and then in turn, took lessons at the school herself as an adult. Miss Vacani could see at once what a great teacher Mary Stassinopoulos would become, and soon gave her a job teaching in one of her schools.
The debutante ritual was so effective a social-climbing tool that parents jockeyed over presentation venues; it was so costly that it created new industries for its supporting staff.
