- Will Ferrell used to work as a mall Santa. Ferrell isn’t new to this Christmas game, he is true to it! Before getting his big break on Saturday Night Live, he worked as a mall Santa in a department store, and SNL co-star Chris Kattan was one of his elves.
- The family appear won Ferrell over for the role. Being the typical funny guy that Ferrell is, it was a breath of fresh air for the Saturday Night Live alum to get involved with something that kids of all ages can laugh at for a change.
- Jim Carrey was initially eyed to play Buddy in Elf. When David Berenbaum’s spec script first emerged in 1993, Carrey was pre-Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and attached to front the Christmas film.
- Years before SNL or Elf, Will Ferrell worked as a mall Santa. And his A Night at the Roxbury co-star Chris Kattan was his elf. This was back when the pair were pre-Saturday Night Live, and part of The Groundlings comedy troupe.
- Director Jon Favreau favored practical effects on the set of elf. Inspired by the Christmas specials he grew up with, Favreau explained in the film’s commentary track that he employed “old techniques” instead of CGI whenever possible.
- Much of the snow you see in Elf was often computer-generated. Some effects just couldn’t be practical. These included the snowflakes that drift over the opening credits, and many of the snowballs in Buddy’s pivotal fight scene.
