The attention to detail on the iconic form factor, the feel of the switches, the ease of use, etc. I have a good amount of mostly common 2600 (ntsc) atari/activision/imagic cartridges from back in the day and they all worked out of the box.
Repro quality varies so you might want to order from 3 or more vendors and decide from there. They're super cheap and a lot of people online and amazon are just reselling at 3x the price. There's a couple of NA sellers that look like they do good work but I can't comment on the actual quality.
For many people, a CRT doesn't make sense, and for the amount of money it takes for a real 2600 to play nice with a modern TV, you're better off just getting a modern HDMI console. A Raspberry Pi will do the job for most people, but if you want something that takes original carts or controllers, the Retron77 and 2600+ might be worth a look.
Nov 25, 2023 · The Atari 2600+ is an oddball. Inside is a small board, most of which is dedicated to connectivity. The main PCB is a tiny Pi-ish thing. Every time you plug in a cart, the console dumps the ROM and squirts it to an emulator. This takes five to ten seconds, in stark contrast to the immediacy of the original 1970s console.
Both products are considered to be as reliable and safe as possible. Repros and bootlegs can be hit and miss. You have any number of people making them and each person puts a different amount of effort into their creation. Games with onboard saving tend to be more problematic.
