Although his death is what started the whole series, the most revealing flashbacks about James actually come in the fifth movie when Harry infiltrates Snape's mind and sees his past.

I think the movies have a plot that moves forward and makes sense within each individual movie, but the important plot details that connect them together and to the larger story are mostly absent. I can totally understand why my husband isn't that interested in Harry Potter based on what he's seen.

As Harry’s broomstick’s is labeled with the year 2000. Harry’s back story parallels family members who’ve lost their relatives after 9/11 while Voldemort is a metaphor for Osama Bin Ladin.
