  1. Feb 10, 2021 · I guess what a lot of people mean when they say that light travels through empty space is that it doesn't require a physical medium (matter) to travel through - like sound waves do. The fact of the matter is that light does travel in the electromagnetic field, but the electromagnetic field is just a mathematical tool - as are all the other fields in QFT.

  2. Light is a type of electromagnetic radiation that can be detected by the eye. It travels as a transverse wave. Unlike a sound waves, light waves do not need a medium to pass through, they can ...

  3. May 2, 2014 · Still the fields are there! Therefore, just as a matter wave (which is nothing but a particle), light waves, i.e. waves in the electromagnetic field, can propagate through such a "perfect vacuum". Vacuum fluctuations or quantum mechanics has nothing to do with it. This is true, even in purely classical electromagnetism.

  4. Jun 8, 2022 · When someone says light has no medium, they mean there is no physical substance composed of atoms that needs to oscillate. We still need a background medium. If there were no background EM fields, there would be no light (a rather trite and unphysical statement for any physicists reading this). Hope that clears things up

    • How far does light go? how long does light go. - Jason (age 11) A: Hi Jason, Light just keeps going and going until it bumps into something.
    • less than one photon? Can light intensity reduce to a level where it's energy is less than 1 photon (probably after travelling an almost infinite distance from a point source)?
    • stars too far away to see? does there is any star that we can can't get it's light because of itis farness?...... sorry with having any problems in my English gramer, my English language is not good enough.
    • light going out to space. If we are reflections of light, does that reflection make it out into space and keeps traveling til its asorbed.
  5. Unlike sound waves, light waves can travel through a vacuum close vacuum Empty space, where there is no solid, liquid or gas present. – they do not need a substance to travel through ...

  7. Mar 5, 2020 · This field exists everywhere in the universe. It oscillates when energy disturbs it, just like the rope moves up and down as someone shakes it. Unlike a wave in water or a sound wave in air, light waves don’t need a physical substance to travel through. They can cross empty space because their medium does not involve physical matter.
