This Minecraft tutorial explains how to use a map with screenshots and step-by-step instructions. In Minecraft, you can use a map to help you navigate around in your world. Let's explore how to use a map.
You craft a locator map and "use" it. You now have a 128x128 map of that area that works like a paper map, not like a HUD map. Walk around while holding it and you see the arrow (you) moving around. Put it on a cartography table with some paper and the output is a map that covers a larger area.
Maps do not scroll, they map out just the surrounding areas. Once you move out of the boundaries of the map, you need to create another. I always recraft maps to maximum zoom, and precalculate the coordinates where I need to start the map to get proper center to align for item frames.
