Jul 31, 2022 · Some players might get upset to see mods shared behind paywalls, but it’s important to understand that there are people willing to pay, as much as there are modders willing to share mods for free. I have no problems with modders getting financial compensation for their work, unless one uses an original work done by myself to achieve, and this is the point where IP (intellectual property ...
Fortunately, the Bethesda modding community seems resistant to this type of thing. The Valve paid mods drama really set a standard, and most competent mod authors know that if they paywall their mods, it's either going to be widely pirated, or a free alternative for the mod will be made (See what happened with Starfield and DLSS3 implementation).
Remember that modders use the creation of the developers to make the mod so if they should get paid for their creation then the developers should be paid by the modders as well. Maybe that would be more fair but it would severely weaken the modding community because there would be a paywall to create a mod in the first place.
But thats how I understood their statement to be. Paywall for a small amount of time is fine as long as it eventually releases for free. I do think that the modders keeping the game alive should be able to be supported and paid in some way. I think the best model of this is to what many modders do. Exclusive for a few weeks and then free.
Jan 23, 2024 · If someone makes a mod from scratch (i.e. without using assets from someone else's free mod), then I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to paywall it. But if content from a free mod is used in a paywalled mod, then I see a problem; the paid mod's author is gaining monetary benefit from work done by someone else for free, which doesn't seem fair.
It's not just against EA's ToS, but based on legal precedent, it is literally against the law and if EA was desperate enough to go after CC creators profiting off of their work, they would have a case considering one of the cases that set this precedent that profiting off of mods is illegal was a legitimate mod that altered the game significantly, CC creators wouldn't stand a chance.
