May 3, 2017 · As far as the cross cuts, start a row with a full tile against the left or right wall and stick down that row. Then, for the second row, simply hook your tape on one of the corners of the first row tiles and start the second row corner at the 8 inch mark on the tape. Or if you think it needs to be 7 7/8, that's fine.
Jul 26, 2021 · Warpage and Lippage. Warpage is a normal result of the manufacturing process when heating and cooling can cause tile to be “domed” slightly higher in the middle. When a 50% offset is used, the highest part of the tile is next to the lowest part of the adjacent one, causing a “lip” at the joint. The 33% offset minimizes this condition.

In ANSI A108.02 where they talk about off-set tiles of 50% vs 33%, they do recommend a 3/16” grout joint to minimize potential lippage with staggered layout on tiles with one edge 15” or larger. If the warpage isn’t bad and you are installing over a plumb substrate you should be able to set with 1/8” wide grout joints and not get more than 1/32” lippage.
