Pets have the same requirements as NPCs, IIRC. (Except that a house can have both an NPC and a pet.) Make housing for every possible NPC, and assign them. Then you can have a separate room for you and a town pet.
The Town Slimes are based on the Slime Prince and the Slime Princess, two Master Mode-exclusive pets dropped by King Slime and Queen Slime respectively. Most of them have the same body shape as the pets, with different colors, accessories, and facial expressions.
