Curriculum vitae, or CV, personal statements provide a quick way for you to introduce yourself to prospective employers. The personal statement is the part of a CV that provides recruiters and hiring managers with a brief overview of your professional profile or career objectives. It consists of a short paragraph that follows your name and contact information at the top of the document. Also known as personal profiles, personal statements differ from the longer statements usually included with university applications.CV personal statements typically consist of three components:

•A statement of who you are

    •Your value to the organization

    •Your career objectives

    1. State who you are.

Start with a statement detailing where you are in your career. This should communicate your current position in your profession and field of specialization. You might also want to include information about what you like most about your job and any qualities that make you the right choice for the position you are applying for.Example: “As an experienced digital marketing specialist, I am well-versed in many aspects of e-commerce, having helped several multinational brands develop their marketing strategies and improve their market reach.”

    2. Communicate your value.

The second part of your statement should communicate your suitability for the position and your value to the organization. This section should highlight achievements that are relevant to the target position and show that you have qualities that can be useful to the organization. When choosing achievements to mention, select those that directly relate to the position. By doing so, you can quickly establish yourself as the right candidate for the job. If the position requires a background in management, for example, mention previous situations that have placed you in a managerial role. Example: “In my most recent job, I was responsible for managing a team of more than 20 employees. I employed the latest management methods and principles in ensuring maximum productivity and enhancing communications across multiple departments. I was also directly involved in the development of strategies that optimized workflows and reduced redundancy throughout the firm."

    3. State your career objectives.

The third section of your personal statement should reaffirm your reason for applying for the target position. You would ideally have already communicated your skills and qualifications in the previous sections, so you can keep this section concise and direct.Example: “I am seeking a senior management role in the e-commerce field, which will enable me to contribute my skills and experience while increasing my knowledge.” To upload the template into Google Docs, go to File > Open > and select the correct downloaded file.Related: Curriculum Vitae (CV) Format Guide (with Examples and Tips

    Create a unique personal statement

Try to create a unique statement with each application so that you can showcase skills that more closely match the job. This is a more effective approach than using a generic statement that may not highlight your suitability for a specific position.

    Use real-world examples

You might find it more effective to communicate your qualities by detailing beneficial actions that relate to real-world scenarios instead of listing buzzwords like “ambitious,” “motivated,” and “driven.”

    Be concise

It is generally best to limit your statement to three or four sentences, totaling a maximum of about 200 words. That should be enough for an impactful personal statement that remains easy to scan by the employer.

    For first-time job applicants:

“I recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, majoring in statistics and analytics. I have experience working in the financial sector by way of an internship with a major multinational firm, which has helped me develop technical capabilities in data engineering and science. I have consistently proven my ability to meet deadlines and achieve project objectives, solve mission-critical problems and prioritize crucial tasks while maintaining the high standards expected of my role. I am currently seeking a position in an established data science firm to further my career goals.”

    For experienced professionals:

“Skilled and highly-experienced product engineer with an extensive background in the automotive industry. Has a degree in mechanical engineering and over a decade of experience in the field. Has worked extensively in laboratory settings overseeing specialized testing processes and training new technicians. Wide range of experience covering team management, conceptualizing development projects and implementing innovative procedures. Currently looking for a position to contribute extensive industry skills and experience.”“An experienced digital marketing specialist with extensive experience in e-commerce. Has worked with several multinational brands in the development of global marketing strategies, improving market reach and coverage. Currently seeking a senior marketer position in a globally-competitive firm.” Share: Twitter LinkedIn Facebook Email
