Rust is a cancer, and once it's there it just gets worse. Rust you also see is the worst of the rust you haven't seen. When you come to fix it, you need to cut that rust out, and go back to good metal. It's not unheard of for a piece of rust that you've seen that's the size of a 50p piece to involve a good square foot of metal to be removed.

May 13, 2019 · Just restored my Mk1 which I've owned for 16 years, and restored my wife's 2002 SVT 4 years back with similar issues to you. We have both cars still, and will have for a long time to come. So, been there & got the T shirt. As has been said, Mk2.5/Mk2/Mk1 visible rot only becomes visually rampant when there is much going on beneath.
1. Award. ChrisRx718. • 2 yr. ago. I had a MK1 back in 2011 which had only been imported in 2004 and even that was starting to rust. They're worth saving, but go in with your eyes open - you'll need to spend more than the car's worth to get it reasonable and even then you could be chasing rust like others have said.
