Jan 21, 2017 · how big is the rust problem. This is my first post on the forum, so forgive me if Ive posted in the wrong place or am generally not following accepted protocols. The reason for my post is that I am looking to purchase an mx5, probably mk2 1.8, 03-04 plate. I have looked on this forum and others for buying advice.
Rust is a cancer, and once it's there it just gets worse. Rust you also see is the worst of the rust you haven't seen. When you come to fix it, you need to cut that rust out, and go back to good metal. It's not unheard of for a piece of rust that you've seen that's the size of a 50p piece to involve a good square foot of metal to be removed.

Dec 17, 2013 · The underbody rust can certainly be an issue on mk2's, I tidied the front jacking points this year and tbh I was surprised at the amount of rust round them for a car which is only 7 years old, mk2 petrol tanks also seem to be more rust prone than mk1's, however I've seen a few mk1's with rust holes in the front inner wing area/chassis rail.
1. Award. ChrisRx718. • 2 yr. ago. I had a MK1 back in 2011 which had only been imported in 2004 and even that was starting to rust. They're worth saving, but go in with your eyes open - you'll need to spend more than the car's worth to get it reasonable and even then you could be chasing rust like others have said.
Sep 29, 2015 · My Mk1 import that came in from Japan in Feb 2015 does not suffer from rust issues. Mk1s tend to be more resilient than Mk2s in general, especially UK based cars, so I would go for an import ...
