I tend to go in between not too rusty but enough to make a difference and have some sort of rust tone.plus you have to think how long your tank has been in the field,is it nearly new or has it seen some action and also what time of year the vehicle is in.
Dec 17, 2013 · The underbody rust can certainly be an issue on mk2's, I tidied the front jacking points this year and tbh I was surprised at the amount of rust round them for a car which is only 7 years old, mk2 petrol tanks also seem to be more rust prone than mk1's, however I've seen a few mk1's with rust holes in the front inner wing area/chassis rail.
Rust is a cancer, and once it's there it just gets worse. Rust you also see is the worst of the rust you haven't seen. When you come to fix it, you need to cut that rust out, and go back to good metal. It's not unheard of for a piece of rust that you've seen that's the size of a 50p piece to involve a good square foot of metal to be removed.

They're worth saving, but go in with your eyes open - you'll need to spend more than the car's worth to get it reasonable and even then you could be chasing rust like others have said.
