Dec 17, 2013 · The underbody rust can certainly be an issue on mk2's, I tidied the front jacking points this year and tbh I was surprised at the amount of rust round them for a car which is only 7 years old, mk2 petrol tanks also seem to be more rust prone than mk1's, however I've seen a few mk1's with rust holes in the front inner wing area/chassis rail.

When you come to fix it, you need to cut that rust out, and go back to good metal. They're worth saving, but go in with your eyes open - you'll need to spend more than the car's worth to get it reasonable and even then you could be chasing rust like others have said.
